Off-Grid Living in Caye Caulker: A Chat with Jim and Sherry Kadryna
By Giselle de la Fuente
If you’ve ever thought about living off-grid in a paradise like Caye Caulker, Belize, but felt hesitant because of the unknowns, then this conversation with Jim and Sherry Kadryna is for you. The couple kindly shared their experiences and provided a wealth of knowledge on the intricacies and benefits of off-grid living on the island.
Understanding Off-Grid Living
Off-grid living is, in essence, living without reliance on the public utility system. It’s about generating your own electricity, sourcing your own water, and being self-sufficient.
Jim started by sharing his initial apprehensions: “Originally, I looked at property in Puerto Vallarta. As an American, I was fearful about living off-grid because I cherish my conveniences. Things like air conditioning and the luxury of not having to worry about things when I’m on vacation. But after settling in Caye Caulker, we quickly realized the immense benefits.”
Electricity: Harnessing Nature’s Power
Jim shared, “Though the initial investment might be substantial, with our $40,000 USD solar system and lithium batteries, we’re promised at least ten years without an electric bill. From AC units, lights, security systems, internet to water pumps and TVs – we’re entirely powered by our solar setup. Plus, during outages, while others struggle, we’re unaffected.”
Water: The Cistern System
On to the subject of water, Sherry took over: “We collect rainwater in a cistern, filtering it for daily use. At our home and condos, we have about 44,000 gallons of water storage. The primary costs involve minimal maintenance and occasionally, when needed, topping up from water delivery trucks. Despite being slightly more expensive than back in the States, the convenience and self-reliance make it worthwhile.”
Internet, Insurance, and Septic Systems
Jim pointed out, “With a mere $55 a month, we have high-speed internet. Our insurance costs are about $100 a month, covering even hurricanes. As for septic systems, we’ve two on our property. With no sewer bills, and the regulations ensuring our water sources are safe, it’s a financially sound setup.”
Cooking and Backup Systems
“Cooking in Caye Caulker is mainly done using butyl propane, which powers our stoves and instant hot water heaters. Even if there are overcast days affecting our solar power, it takes about three days of cloudy skies to drain our batteries. And if needed, a small generator can act as a backup,” Sherry added.
The Benefits and Return on Investment
Jim emphasized, “The ROI of off-grid living here is tangible. With almost zero monthly bills, the upfront investment gets justified. Not to mention the security of having backup resources. Living here has revealed unexpected benefits of off-grid living, especially when compared to places like Pennsylvania where I’m from.”
Concluding the conversation, the interviewer expressed gratitude, “Thank you so much, Jim and Sherry. Your insights have certainly alleviated many concerns and answered key questions for potential buyers and those considering a move to the island.”
Living off-grid might seem challenging, but with the right investments and a shift in perspective, it can not only be comfortable but also environmentally conscious and cost-effective. And for those considering Caye Caulker, it’s heartening to know that pioneers like Jim and Sherry are paving the way.
