Travel Tips from a Belize Local: Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting!

Hello adventurers and wanderers! I’m Giselle, a proud Belizean from the beautiful Cawker, Belize. Over the years, I’ve encountered numerous tourists and gathered an array of common questions and misconceptions about my country. So, here I am to provide you with the top 10 things you should know before setting foot in Belize.

1. Language Surprise:

Though geographically nestled in Central America and surrounded by Spanish-speaking neighbors like Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, the official language of Belize is English. But wait, don’t get surprised if you hear a lot of locals speaking something different, which brings me to my next point.

2. Belizean Creole – More Than Just Broken English:

Despite English being the official language, the most widely spoken dialect here is Creole. Contrary to popular belief, Belizean Creole is a form of broken English, not French. So, if you’re familiar with Creole from places like Haiti or Louisiana, you’re in for a surprise. But hey, to make your journey fun, remember this tip: words ending in “ER” in English usually end in “A” in Creole. For example, “dancer” becomes “dança.” And if you want to greet locals like a pro, just say, “Whe to go on?” which translates to “What’s going on?”

3. Currency Exchange and Payment Modes:

Two Belize dollars equals one US dollar. US dollars are widely accepted throughout Belize, and many locals prefer them. While ATMs are accessible for cash withdrawals, Belize remains a predominantly cash-driven economy. Most places might charge you an additional fee for credit card payments or have a minimum purchase requirement.

4. Safety in Belize:

Most of the touristic spots in Belize are safe. While Belize City requires a bit more caution, especially during the night, tourist areas like the islands are generally secure. However, always prioritize your safety – avoid poorly lit areas and be mindful of your surroundings.

5. A Diver’s Paradise:

Belize boasts the second-largest barrier reef globally, offering a fantastic experience for scuba diving enthusiasts. Dive deep and explore the colorful marine life of this underwater wonder.

6. The Melting Pot of Cultures:

From the Garifunas, who have a grand celebration every 19th of November, to the Mestizos found mainly in Northern Belize, Belize is a cauldron of diverse cultures. We also have the Mayans, Creoles, Chinese, Taiwanese, Indians, and even Mennonites, our own version of the Amish.

7. Traveling Cost in Belize:

While Belize might be a tad more expensive than its Central American neighbors, the cost varies based on your location within the country. Islands, being remote, might cost more due to transportation expenses.

8. Getting Around in Belize – The Real Adventure:

Our infamous “chicken bus” will give you a genuine local experience. If you’re looking for a bit more comfort, “Floralia” is our luxury bus line with a fixed schedule. Alternatively, airlines like Tropic Air or Mayan Air can get you around to almost all parts of Belize.

9. Let’s Talk Drinks:

Local alcoholic beverages are quite affordable in Belize. However, imported or top-shelf alcohol can be pricier due to high import duties. And guess what? We have no open container laws, so feel free to enjoy your drink as you stroll!

10. The Heart of Belize – Its People:

Belizeans are a welcoming, friendly, and jovial bunch. Interacting with tourists and sharing our rich culture is something we cherish. Engage in conversations, and you’ll soon feel like part of the Belizean family!

That’s all for now, explorers! Don’t forget to stay tuned for my next blog post, where we delve deeper into Belize’s diverse ethnicities and their unique cultures.
